Chapter 3.3. Confusion in the Quran
When I first read the Quran, that was my overwhelming experience. It was impossible to get any One Overall Message. I was totally confused, but I thought it was just a result of my own lack of understanding. I thought: May be I was just stupid.
1. Confusion in searching for the main message of the Quran
In the Previous Chapter I share my "research" in searching for the Main Message of the Quran by asking this question to many Muslims; I also told how their answers confused me even more; They answer so wide, so different - I found it nearly impossible to summarise it in a few words; I could only use the word Confusion to describe it.
After asking many other people that I met that were also busy with studying Islam and the Quran - mostly Christians that want to share the Gospel with Muslims - the answer most of the times can be summarized with the word CONFUSION.
The following is a very informative article about Confusion in the Quran from the Blog: Countering Islam. Please go there and read it for yourself.
Quran 15:9 – The confusion in the Quran
Muslim’s believe the scriptures of the Jews and Christians have become corrupted, but the most confused scripture must be the Quran. The Quran has inconsistencies that the Quran claims is solved by abrogation, but abrogation relies on the chronological order of the Quran being known. So, why did Allah neglect to put the Quran in chronological order? The final result is a scripture that is confusing despite Allah’s claim that it is clear [Quran 16:44] and is protected from corruption [Quran 15:9].
Muslim religious scholars know this because they ask lay-Muslims not to interpret the Quran for themselves because they could get confused by it.
Taḥrīf (“distortion, alteration”) is an Arabic term used by Muslims for the alterations which Islamic tradition claims Jews and Christians have made to the revealed books, specifically those that make up the Tawrat (or Torah), Zabur (possibly Psalms) and Injil (or Gospel).
Traditional Muslim scholars, based on Qur’anic and other traditions, maintain that Jews and Christians have changed the word of God. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahrif (2017/03/18)
2. However, Muslims claim the Quran is clear?
"With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed unto thee the Remembrance that thou mayst explain to mankind that which hath been revealed for them, and that haply they may reflect." [Quran 16:44]
And Allah will guard the Quran from corruption:
Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) . [Quran 15:9]
However, it appears that Allah has not guarded the Quran from corruption because the Quran is not clear, and the following is a list of some of the reasons why it is confusing:
- Confusion has been caused by inconsistencies
- Confusion has been caused by its chaotic order
- Confusion was caused when Allah introduced abrogation
- Confusion is caused by its lack of chronology
- Confusion is caused when the Hadith contradicts the Quran
- Confusion is caused by Quran’s poor wording
- Confusion is caused by laws being unnecessarily limited in scope
- Confusion is caused by translation problems

I wonder what the ulama think when they interpret the verses of the Quran that say the Quran is clear:
And certainly We have revealed to you clear communications and none disbelieve in them except the transgressors. [Quran 2:99]
With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed unto thee the Remembrance that thou mayst explain to mankind that which hath been revealed for them, and that haply they may reflect. [Quran 16:44]
3. Something to let one think.
There are many many books written on how to interpret the Quran. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tafsir (2012/08/05)]
The many books written (and the many Hadiths needed) that try and interpret the Quran is the best evidence that the Quran is not clear. If the Quran is as clear as it claims then only one book would be needed, the Quran itself.
