Chapter 3.7 Quran Versions
1.WHAT ABOUT THE MANY VERSIONS OF THE QURAN?
In the previous Chapters we look at the many errors and contradictions in the Arabic Quranic Text. Now we ask the following question:
Islam claims that the Quran is One perfectly preserved Word of God. Therefor the original Arabic text used should be ONE standard text, am I right?
There shouldn’t be various versions. Further, no mistakes should be found, especially with examples of corrections made afterwards.
What is the story about the many Versions of the Quran then?
My Muslim friend's reaction was... What? It can't be.
He then asked me… "Why don't you just open your heart and read our Quran with the advice from Muslim’s scholars...
Why do you keep defending the Christian religion and the Bible that's continuously get proven wrong and corrupt?”
My answer to my Muslim friend… Thanks, I tried to study the Quran and searched for help from various Muslim and Christian scholars.
Do you want to know what I found?
Although Muslims claim that the Quran is unchanged and there are no variants in their scripture and that Muslims all over the world use the one and the same Quran as any corruption of the Quran was supposed to be preserved by Allah… (Sura15:9).
When one research the Quran’s “unchanged and preserved” text further…
One found that this is not true; this is false.
Muslim friend, are you Open for the truth?
Open and willing to look deeper into the problem yourself?
Can I ask you: Do you read and study the whole Quran yourself?
Do you even know how many verses are there in the Quran? (The answer I found was very interesting: given underneath)
During my research I found many different variations by Muslims while trying to depend on their (your) religion and your Quran.
A few things that I found about your glorious Quran, about the Islam claim – which I understand that you still also believe – that there is only ONE TEXT…
What I found is the following…
It not only the many errors and contradictions in the Quran text that was described above, but... there are more than One so called Original Arabic version of the Quran.
From the following post it seems... Seven different version of the Koran.
- "What is said about Al-Mutaawwilin (those who form wrong opinions of disbelief about their Muslim brothers). Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "I heard Hisham bin Al-Hakim reciting Surat-al-Furqan during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle (SAW). I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah's Apostle (SAW) had not taught me.
- So, I was about to jump over him during his prayer, but I waited till he finished his prayer whereupon I put, either his upper garment or my upper garment, around his neck and seized him by it and asked him, "Who has taught you this Sura?" He replied, "Allah's Apostle (SAW) has taught it to me." I said (to him), "You have told a lie! By Allah, Allah's Apostle (SAW) has taught me this Sura which I have heard you reciting." So, I dragged him, to Allah's Apostle (SAW), I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have heard this man reciting Surat-al-Furqan in a way which you have not taught me, and you did teach me Surat-al-Furqan." On that Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "O Umar, release him! Recite, O Hisham." So Hisham recited before him in the way as I had heard him reciting. Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "It has been revealed like this."
- Then Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "Recite O Umar." So, I recited it. The Prophet (SAW) said, "It has been revealed like this." And then he added, "This Quran has been revealed to be recited in seven different ways, so recite it which ever way easier for you." (See Hadith No. 514 Vol. 6) Vol. 9 - Apostates - Chapter 9 27/30)
What I also found is that there are – Many Variant Readings of the Quran:
"Muslims attack the Bible on the grounds that it sometimes has conflicting wording from different manuscripts.
Yet this is exactly the case with the text of the Quran. There are many conflicting readings on the text of the Quran as Arthur Jeffery has demonstrated in his book, Material for the History of the Text of the Quran" (New York, Russell F. Moore, 1952).
- Mentions Variant readings in the Koran: Dashti, 23 Years, p. 28
- Mentions Variant readings in the Koran: Mandudi, Meaning of the Quran, pp. 17-18
- Mentions Variant readings in the Koran: McClintock and Strong, Cyclopedia, V152).
- "[the Koran] had a large number of variants, not always trifling in significance" (Islam, p. 189).
- "It is interesting to note that in scholarly Muslim journals, there is beginning to be a grudging acknowledgment of the fact that there are variant and conflicting readings on the text of the Quran" (One example would be Saleh al-Wahaihu, "A Study of Seven Quranic Variants," International Journal of Islamic and Arabic Studies, Vol. V (1989), #2, pp. 1-57).
- "The Muslin accounts of the history of the Quran texts are a mass of confusion, contradiction and inconsistencies" (Burton, Collection, p. 231).
- "Abdollah renounced Islam on the ground that the revelations, if from God, could not be changed at the prompting of a scribe such as he. After his apostasy he went to Mecca and joined the Qorayshites" (Dashti, 23 Years, p. 98).
- "There being some passages in the Quran which are contradictory, the Muhammadan doctors obviate any objection from thence by the doctrine of abrogation; for they say that God in the Quran commanded several things which were for good reasons afterwards revoked and abrogated" (E. Wherry, A Comprehensive Commentary on the Qurun, p. 110).
- "It is to us astounding how so compromising a procedure can have been permitted to be introduced into the system by friends and foes (Canon Sell in his work, Historical Development of the Qura, Madras: Diocesan Press, 1923, pp. 36-37).
- "When Muhammad died there existed no singular codex of the sacred text" (Caesar Farah, Islam: Beliefs and Observations, New York; Barrons, 1987, p. 28).
- "One thing only is certain and is openly recognized by tradition, namely, that there was not in existence any collection of revelations in the final form, because, as long as he was alive, new revelations were being added to the earlier ones" (The Shorter Encyclopedia of Islam p. 271).
Isn’t this enough proof that the Muslim claim is false?
The final proof is in the covers of this Book.
What Muslim and non-Muslim scholars say about the known variations or versions within the Quran being used in the world today:
- "Owing to the fact that the kufic script in which the Koran was originally written contained no indication of vowels or diacritical points, variant readings are recognized by Muslims as of equal authority." (N.J. Dawood, The Koran, Middlesex, England: Penguin Books, 1983, p 10, introduction to Dawood's translation of the Koran)
- "Lists of the differences between the two transmissions are long, ... (however) The simple fact is that none of the differences, whether vocal (vowel and diacritical points) or graphic (basic letter), between the transmission of Hafs and the transmission of Warsh has any great effect on the meaning. Many are differences which do not change the meaning at all, and the rest are differences with an effect on meaning in the immediate context of the text itself, but without any significant wider influence on Muslim thought. One difference (Q. 2/184) influences the meaning that might conceivably be argued to have wider ramifications." (adrian Brockett, `The Value of the Hafs and Warsh transmissions for the Textual History of the Quran', Approaches to the History of the Interpretation of the Quran, ed. Andrew Rippin; Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1988, p 34,37)
- "the Reading of Abu `Amr in the version of al-Duri ... prevails in the Sudan, Nigeria, and Central Africa." (Labib as-Said, The Recited Koran: A History of the First Recorded Version, tr. B. Weis, et al, Princeton, New Jersey: The Darwin Press, 1975, p. 84)
- Certain variant readings existed and, indeed, persisted and increased as the Companions who had memorised the text died, and because the inchoate (basic) Arabic script, lacking vowel signs and even necessary diacriticals to distinguish between certain consonants, was inadequate. ... - In the 4th Islamic century, it was decided to have recourse (to return) to "readings" (qira'at) handed down from seven authoritative "readers" (qurra'); in order, moreover, to ensure accuracy of transmission, two "transmitters" (rawi, pl. ruwah) were accorded to each. - There resulted from this seven basic texts (al-qira'at as-sab', "the seven readings"), each having two transmitted versions (riwayatan) with only minor variations in phrasing, but all containing meticulous vowel-points and other necessary diacritical marks. The authoritative "readers" are: Nafi (from Medina; d.169/785) The predominant reading today, spread by Egyptian Koran readers, is that of `Asim in the transmission (riwayah) of Hafs (d. 190/805). In Morocco, however, the reading is that of Nafi` in the riwayah of Warsh (d. 197/812) and Maghrebin Korans are written accordingly. (Cyril Glassé, The Concise Encyclopedia of Islam, San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1989, p 324) |

There are even more Readers than these, but these are considered the most authoritative.
So, what was found is proof that there are 26 variant versions of the Quran in Arabic that anybody can buy today in bookshops and even on the Internet.
The question is…Which one is the so called original or traditional Muhammed version?
This question was asked to Yasir Qadhi, Muslim scholars and leading Islam theologian, but he don't have answers for this and agreed with Jay Smith, Brubaker and others by saying "That the standard narrative has holes in it".
(You can hear that Qadhi, in an interview with MohammedHijab, on June 8th, had to admit that on a public video, later turned off the comments section and later deleted that video?) What does that say?
You can view this information here; very interesting stuff...
Qadhi also agreed with Jay Smith that “Islam has a crisis of faith with 23% becoming Apostates!". Afterwards… Qadhi’s bad manners in dealing with this issues were all over the internet.
Listen to this Yasir Qadhi’s full interview:
- There was a question in this interview (for them a crisis) that had to do with the various ahruf and qira’at - i.e., versions - of the Quran.
- In the interview, the Islam scholar, Dr. Yashir Qadhi, does not explain the issue at all and rather repeatedly states that the issue should rather not be discussed in public. Why not? (See the Reference underneath)
(See 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 30 min for the quotes)
Note: As of (approximately) July 2020, Dr. Qadhi has set this video to "private" so that it is no longer viewable. However, you can still watch much of the interview by searching YouTube for "yasir qadhi muhammad hijab preservation of quran" or similar words.
4. More about Various different Versions of the Quran
More about Various different Versions of the Quran, presented by Brother Ismael, one time Muslim Arabic Scholar (one who knows the Arabic language and traditions very well as he was a Muslim Apologist for 16 years before he left Islam).
You can listen to his testimony why he left Islam after 16 years of defending Muhammad and the Religion here)
Brother Ismael also once believed - like most Muslims - that the Quran is unchanged and there are no variants in their scripture. Muslims are told that all Muslims all over the world use the one and the same Quran.
After leaving Islam he started asking questions: Is this true? His research for the truth got outstanding answers.
He found he can walk into many local Islamic bookshop and ask what versions of the Quran they sell.
This one is from a bookshop in Jordan... 24 Arabic Versions.
He presents many proofs of such variations in the Arabic Versions available to buy in many bookshops – all claiming to be the “original” Quran Version from Muhammad. You can see for yourself – its not always minor corrections; sometimes it’s big variations that change the whole meaning of the text.
May I ask my Muslim Friend that I mentioned above (the one who asked me why I continue defending my Christian faith and not rather started reading the Quran and converted to Islam) – Friend, may I ask you the same question:
"Why do you keep on defending your Islam religion and Quran that's continuously get proven wrong and corrupt?
I asked you before: How many verses are there in your Quran? Did you know?
I also asked you: What version of the Quran do you use?
• Did you even know before that there are differences?
• Is yours a Hafs or Warsh version? Or another?
I found that the number of verses in Hafs is 6236, while Warsh has only 6214 Verses. Am I correct? Isn't it claimed that not one verse of the Quran has ever been changed? So how thus this work?
Which one is correct? Which one is the right version? Which is the one Muhammad recited? Which one matches the eternal preserved tablets that is with Allah as you believe.
5. How important are the differences between the Quranic Versions?
To those Muslims that still believe that the Quran is unchanged and there are no variant versions...
I received this comment from a person on Facebook: “You lied on your post about the Various Versions of the Quran; Its only minor linguistic differences.; Show me one difference between Hafs and Warsh?”
Somebody else responded: “They are versions of your Arabic Quran... Your sheikhs and imams won’t tell ya truth”
6. Another look into the difference between Hafs and Warsh.
What is Warsh and how does it differ from Hafs?
A short Explanation about this question:
It seems there are currently 30+ different versions/readings/Qira'ats/Qurans that exist in the world today.
A Qira'at, regarding the Quran, is an iteration of the text done by a group of scholars; there were 30 popular ones in Islam.
10 were ‘official readers’ and another 20 were students who worked underneath the readers, known as ‘transmitters. (Its was already explained above)
They were responsible for looking closely into the 'rasm' (The skeletal structure of the text) and then determined where to put dots and vowels into different places.
The names of the list of the 10 readers and the transmitters were already given above)
Note: You can order any of these separate versions today online.
Among all these different Qira'ats, there is an overwhelming 93,000 differences.
One was chosen to be the standard Qira'at was Hafs, in 1924. Nobody knows why they chose this one.
Hafs was a student/transmitter who died in 796 ad. He lived in Kufa. Furthermore, Hafs was not even one of the 'Readers', nor did he live alongside the prophet Muhammad, nor during the time of King Uthman.
Muhammad Al-Hussaini al-Hadad an Egyptian teacher at the University in Cairo, was asked by the Bureau of Education there, to choose ‘one’ of the Qira'ats as the authoritative one.
That’s him that chose Hafs. His credentials are not known, and no one seems to know why he chose Hafs. This took place in 1924.
The “1400-year-old Uthman argument” has only been around for 100 years. It is a recent argument which is currently falling to pieces since it is utterly failing the test of ‘Historical Criticism’.
This is now very clear that there are many versions of the Arabic Quran. (The 2 most popular versions seem to be the Hafs and Warsh with others like the Qalun, Al-Duri, Al-Bazzi, etc)
Is yours a Hafs or Warsh version? (Somebody told me you must look at the first verse of Sura al-Fatihah. If there is a number “1” after the Bismillah verse, then you have the Hafs version. If there is no “1”, you have the Warsh version.
It seems that if you’re in Saudi Arabia, you’re using the Hafs. If you live in Morocco, you’re using the Warsh.
Did you know …
- That the official version of the Quran was only finalized in 1924 in Cairo, Egypt?
- The Quran was only authorized officially in 1985 in Saudi Arabia.
Muslim Scholars know for a long time already that there are several versions of the Quran, but they keep this secret for so long? Why?
How important are those variations or are they only minor differences?
The few knowledgeable Muslims who are aware of the existence of these different versions will say there are very minor differences, mainly vocal variations. Again, this is not true.
Here are a couple of examples of text variants that can be found in the Arabic Hafs and Warsh that show that the Quranic text and meaning itself has been altered!
Let we just show one example of the difference between Hafs and Warsh:
Surah 98:6 Not a minor difference at all!
- 2:125 in Hafs is ÙˆَاتَّØ®ِذوْا “WatakhIzu” (You shall take) / In Warsh it is ÙˆَاتَّØ®َذوْا “WatakhAzu” (They have taken/made).
In 2:125 One version gives a command, while the other states a historical observation.
- Another one: 3:146 in Hafs is قاتل “Qatal” (Fought) / In Warsh it is ُقتل “Qutil” (Were Killed).
In 3:146 the difference is between a prophet and those with him being killed, while in the other the difference only means that they fought by his side.
- There’s more: Look up 2:85, 15:8, 21:4, 33:68, 42:30, 48:17 in both these versions and see for yourself.
In fact, if you study further, you will find that number of verses in Hafs is 6236, while Warsh has only 6214 verses (other versions show 6616, 6217, 6204 verses, etc ).
Were you aware of this? Probably not. Why not? Why did your scholars not tell this to you?
Which is the right version? Hafs or Warsh? Or another?
Is it the Hafs or Warsh that is preserved in the eternal tablets with Allah?
Allah said that He will preserve his words. (Sura 15:9)

How did Muslims respond to this Facts? Amazing!
One Muslim answer me like this: "Only an ignorant Muslim will leave Islam because of riwayah of the Quran, inspite the mode of transmission, the Quran is still the purest scripture on Earth"
That means... Just put your head in the ground and continue as usual.
"My Mind Is Made Up. Don’t Confuse Me With the Facts"

7. So how many different Qira'ats/Qurans Versions are there now?
The list above, alone, proves this matter, and unfortunately the number of different Qira'ats/Qurans continues to rise as they are being discovered and reported.
In 2016, 26 different Qurans were discovered by Professor Hatun Tash, who later presented them at the 'Speakers Corner' in London England with the help of Dr. Jay Smith. They faced heavy opposition despite the clear evidence they had in their hands.
These 2 professionals have devoted many years studying the history of Islam and the authenticity of the Quran. Dr. Jay Smith began his scholarly research in this area during his time in India, and officially began taking on this issue in a public setting since 1995, starting with a debate in Cambridge.
Their findings are a phenomenal breakthrough.
No Muslim has confronted the ‘textual historical analyses of the Quran. The 6 manuscripts, each located in their respected places, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Paris, London, Egypt, and Yemen, were never challenged in the field of Academia until 2002–2007, by two Muslim scholars.
8. Dr. Jay Smith’s analysis of the Qira’at Problem.
Dr Jay Smith from © Pfander Centre for Apologetics - US, 2020 did a complete analysis of the Qira'at Problem which has shaken the Muslim world during 2020.
In this 2-hour video he unpacks 10 areas which have created a conundrum for Muslims today, so much so that their scholars and popular YouTubers have been forced to delete interviews on the subject within weeks, due to their complete inability to explain why there are more than 30 different Qira'at Quran's, despite their protestations that there has only ever been 1 Quran.

[7] Comparing Hafs with Warsh
[8] The 1924 Hafs Canonized Text

[10] Conclusions
Below the YouTube video are Jay Smith’s 21 conclusions summarized:
1)Muslims are forced to say the Quran is perfectly preserved because of Surahs 10:15; 15:9; & 18:27
2)Modern scholars make claims they can not hope to support (i.e., “No word or letter has changed”) Their claims are wreaking havoc within Muslim communities, post June 8, 2020
3)There never has been just 1 Quran, and certainly not any from the 7th century
4)The fact that Arabic could not accommodate a written text so early needs to be acknowledged
5)How could Muhammad receive 7 recitations (dialects) if he only lived in Mecca & Medina?
6)If there was a canonical ‘Quraishi’ Quran by 652 ad, where is it today?
7)Furthermore, where are the 5 ‘Quraishi’ copies sent to Medina, Mecca, Basra, Kufa & Damascus?
8)What has happened to Ubai ibn Ka’b, Ibn Mas’ud, and Ibn Musa’s Manuscripts? Where are they?
9)The 8th century Qira’at Qurans only begin to appear over 100 years after Muhammad died; This proves they never knew Muhammad, nor even worked in his century.
10) They were chosen even later, between 936 – 1429 ad, thus, 300 – 800 years too late!
11) So, the ‘seven’ 8th century Qira’ats cannot be the same as ‘Jibril’s seven’ 7th century ‘Recitations’
12) Since Uthman destroyed the Iraqi & Syrian ‘recitations’, why do they suddenly reappear in the 8th c.?
13) Why are only 8 of the 30 official Qira’ats from the areas the Quraishi would have existed (the Hijaz)?
14) We now find that there were many more than 30 Qira’ats; possibly close to 700!
15) It’s curious that the Qira’ats were primarily chosen because of popularity and geography; Shouldn’t a ‘Rawi’ (Transmitter) have the same script as his ‘Reader’, to be legitimate? Each wrote their own unique script, with over 93,000 differences between just 23 of them.
16) Not one of the Qira’at Qurans have had any textual critical analysis; No one has tried to find the earliest manuscript to use as a model; No one has looked at the text of any of the subsequent Qira’at Qurans
17) Hafs, the canonical Qira’at was not a member of the first 7, nor of the subsequent 10; •He was unreliable, weak, untrustworthy, and a liar, used objectionable material & fabricated chains, so that others avoided him, and refused to use him; •He was initially chosen in order to standardize high-school exams on the Quran, but only in Cairo; •He was chosen for political purposes (the Ottoman’s preferred him to the others…but why?)
18) He was chosen by the Saudi Arabian government only 35 years ago, out of expediency; Yet, why did the Arabian government choose an Iraqi dialect over their own Quraishi dialect?
19) Nowhere in this whole process did anyone use TEXTUAL CRITICISM (i.e., whether Haf’s text was similar, or even close to the original Uthmanic Quraishi text)
20) The reason? There was no Uthmanic Quraishi manuscript with which to compare!! There still aren’t even today!!!
Conclusion: From what we have researched, and found, we can conclude that:
- The Quran was not created by God at all
- The Quran was not sent down to Muhammad between 610 – 632 ad
- The Quran was not completed by Uthman in 652 ad
- The Quran was changed in the last 1300 years
- The Quran was finally compiled in 1924, and made official in 1985
- Thus, the Quran is a mere 96…no wait…35 years old!
- Consequently, many of us are older than the Quran!
9. Even more information about the 30 Different Quran versions
Muslims believe the Quran do not have different versions; only one in Arabic with different translations.
This is another video covering a different aspect of the same topic, presented by scholars that really know what they are talking about: Jay Smith and Al Fadi.
They introduced 26 different Quran versions (out of a total of 31) which Hatun Tash was able to buy in marketplaces situated in Jordan, Morocco, and Yemen. Each was created by a student living in the cities of Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Kufa and Basra between the 8th – 10th centuries.
It is from these 26 to possibly 37 different students that we get the differing Qira’at schools which are popular today. When observing just the 26 Qurans they displayed, Hatun and her team in London have already found almost 60,000 differences between them
(Note: Since this recording, the number has increased to 93,000 differences).
The Quran which is used today around the world was created by one student living in the city of Kufa who died in 796 ad, which is 144 years after Muhammad.
It is surrounding these differing Qira’at Qurans that Muslims today think the discussion concerning the changed Qurans lies. They couldn’t be further from the truth. These diacritical differences, coupled with the vowelisation, were all created centuries later.
Thus, it is not these later Qira’at differences which we are talking about at all, but the much earlier and more damaging consonantal scripted differences. That is the focus of our discussion here.
Therefore, when Uthman (if that story is even true) decided to burn the Quranic manuscripts which disagreed with his canonized Quran in 652 ad, he wasn’t burning them because of different Qira’at or Ahruf readings as Muslims today suggest.
Uthman was burning them because their Rasms (their consonantal) letters were different from that of his own."
